Music
Fado music and songs are all about melancholy, longing to one's home country and other deep desires... Guitar and viola (sort of guitar with 12 strings) are the base and support for this auditory cat and mouse game. Amália Rodrigues can unfortunately only be admired on CD nowadays, but by now this Grand Diva has some worthy follow ups. Mariza, born in Moçambique and raised in Portugal sounds so much alike the warm voice of the ambassador of Portuguese music, that it is confusing.
A bit lighter, but definitely as strong, is Dulce Pontes, a bright star in the sky. Her Canção do Mar reached the top of the charts and was played during our first Lusitano performances. Christina Branco recently toured through Europe, attracting a lot of people to her shows. Rao Kyao discovered a new variation on classical fado with his saxophone; lovely background music full of passion. A lot of information on him is available on Google. Bévinda is making wonderful Portuguese inspired music in France. Cineaste Carlos Saura (Carmen, Bodas del Sangue) made a unique documentary on the backgrounds of fado music. The DVD is on sale online. Another genre with New Age influence is Madre Deus.

NUTRITION
After studying equine nutrition I became interested in human nutrition (mainly due to having food intolerance). For some years now I stopped eating meat in order to be able to minimise the suffering and deceit. For gaining awareness on the field of nutrition and on the global agricultural situation I would recommend 2 films, giving an idea about what happens behind the scenes at supermarkets... The website of Wageningen University has a lot of information about food production, additives and E-numbers. Fortunately the food situation is slightly better in Portugal then in other European countries, but also here one has to be more and more careful with what to buy, considering the upcoming of foreign supermarkets. Know what you eat..... Everyone has the choice on how to proceed....
